Smart Antenna Solution by SIMCom

At the Embedded World exhibition in Nuremberg, Germany, SIMCom showcased a vehicle-mounted smart antenna supporting 4G/5G and C-V2X, jointly developed with a leading German Tier-1 supplier of automotive communication receiving systems. EPI USA is proud to be an authorized distributor of SIMCom, committed to introducing and delivering advanced, intelligent, and high-tech solutions to our customers.

SIMCom describes the product as a highly complex smart antenna that integrates multiple functions. With the latest configurations such as MIMO, multiband, and diversity support, the antenna is compatible with all RF communication standards — maximizing both throughput and coverage. It incorporates SIMCom’s SIM8100, SIM7800E, and w59 modules to enable LTE/5G, C-V2X, GNSS, Wi-Fi, and Bluetooth connectivity. Among them, the SIM7800E was SIMCom's first module developed specifically for automotive electronics, while the SIM8100 is a C-V2X module that supports C-V2X connectivity via the PC5 interface, making it suitable for vehicle-to-vehicle (V2V), vehicle-to-pedestrian (V2P), and vehicle-to-infrastructure (V2I) applications.

Advantages Over Traditional Antennas

The smart antenna offers several advantages compared to traditional vehicle-mounted antennas. Today’s vehicles must receive a wide range of signals such as AM/FM, Bluetooth, Wi-Fi, DAB+, 2G, 3G, 4G, GPS, and satellite radio across different frequency bands. In the future, with more functions added, the complexity of wiring in traditional antennas will increase. The smart antenna simplifies this by routing all RF signal data through a single high-speed digital interface into the vehicle network, minimizing signal loss and significantly reducing wiring complexity.

Future Trend

With the arrival of the commercial 5G era in China, the scope and applications of 5G continue to expand rapidly. Automotive connectivity is expected to see strong growth. According to IHS, by 2035, global sales of intelligent autonomous vehicles will exceed 10 million units. By 2022, the global stock of connected vehicles will reach 350 million units, accounting for 24% of the market, while new vehicle sales featuring connectivity functions will hit 98 million units, making up 94% of the market.

As vehicle connectivity technologies become more diverse and the number of connected vehicles increases, the demands on antennas and related devices will become more stringent. SIMCom continues to upgrade its module combinations, and the SIM8200X-Au module — supporting both 5G and C-V2X for automotive applications — is expected to launch soon.
